This will allow for:īetter write performance - only need to write to one drive until you mirror the data later in the week Rather, I'd suggest you just use something like FreeFileSync to set up one or more 1-way synchronization routines, and just have them run once a week or so to keep the data mirrored. The small read performance boost of a RAID 1 array for a couple (presumably) 5200RPM HDDs is going to mostly be negligible, especially without using a hardware array. Since you already have a 500GB SSD, everything you want and need to access quickly will get accessed appropriately there. I wouldn't really recommend trying to set up a software-based RAID setup on the drives.
